After 60 years of evolution, the Department of Power Engineering, founded in October of 1953, has been developed into the School of Energy and Power Engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology。

The school started its undergraduate program at the beginning of 1950s, and graduate program in 1960s. Its complete discipline system was gradually established during 1970s.  In 1981, when China established her degree system, the school was granted to start Ph.D. program at two disciplines: Thermal Power Engineering and Internal Combustion Engine. In 1984 and 1990, other disciplines such as Engineering Thermo-physics, Refrigeration and Cryogenics Engineering, Thermal Energy Engineering and Hydro-Machinery were also authorized to begin Ph.D. program. The Thermal Power Engineering became a State Key Discipline in 1988. At the same year, the application for the set-up of the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion was approved. In 1991, the post-doctoral research stations were established in the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics. In 1998, the school received certification to grant Ph.D. degree for its all disciplines .The Ph.D. programs are Thermal Power Engineering, Engineering Thermo-physics, Power Machinery Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, Chemical Processing Machinery, Energy and Environmental  Engineering , Power Engineering Automation., New Energy Engineering. The discipline of Thermal Power Engineering was honored as a state key discipline again in 2001. In 2007, the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics were honored as a primary subject of State Key Discipline. A series of platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, Sino-US Clean Energy Joint Research Center & Advanced Coal Technology Consortium for innovation and creativity have emerged.  Also, the school is an important support unit of China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energies and New Energy Institute •Wuhan.

The school has 140 staffs including 110 faculty and research fellows, among which there are 39 professors, 2 chief scientists of “973 Project”, 4 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 Yangtze River Scholar, 8 New Century Excellent Talents. The guest professors include 6 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science or Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 3 engineering academicians from U.S.A., Canada and Australia. The school boasts its exceptional team for innovation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, an outstanding team in the “Yangtze river scholars and creative group of ministry of education (MOE). Also, the school won the support of the National “111” Project for China’s Higher Education.

The school carries out researches and educational programs on low-carbon and high efficiency and safe usage of fossil energy, advanced treatment of pollutants, energy efficiency, renewable energy and advanced power engineering. The school has established a complete system of various disciplines, with the power engineering and engineering thermal-physics basic research as the leading role, with the sustainable energy and advanced power technology innovation as the main focus, and with the cultivation of innovative talents with a global vision as the foundation. The school now plays a leading role in researches on mesoscopic theory and methods on trans-scale multiphase reaction flows, oxy-coal combustion and CO2 capturing, etc. .  

In the past ten years, School of Energy and Power Engineering had won the prizes of State Natural Science Award, State Technological Invention Award, State Science and Technology Progress Award, twelve top prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Award. Two patents won the Special Award and Gold Award of Geneva International Exposition. In the past three years, the school obtained 620 million YUAN research funding and a lot of patent transfer benefit. Over the last five years, faculty in the school had published 463 SCI cited papers, one of which has been cited by others up to 210 times.

There are 240 Ph.D. students, 570 master students and 1600 undergraduate students in the school. A system to foster the students with a good learning tradition and academic atmosphere has been built, which aims at equipping students with solid interdisciplinary knowledge and strong ability in theories and application. This provides them wide job opportunities. The program of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering,  New Energy Engineering have been listed in the national plan for elite discipline development. The school has won three top prize items of Provincial Teaching Achievements Awards, and three National Elite Courses. In the past 60 years, the school has cultivated more than 14,000 graduates, the he most distinguished graduates who are playing important roles in famous universities, enterprises, government agencies at home and abroad, to make contributions to the progress of human being.

The school has established long-term collaborations with many famous universities and institutions from over 20 countries, including US, UK, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy and Portugal etc.. More than 60 faculty have been encouraged to go abroad for study, to give lectures, to collaborate in research and to attend international academic conferences every year. In recent years, there are a large number of chancellors of internationally well-known universities and hundreds of overseas professors to visit the school to carry out academic exchanges and to cultivate students jointly. The school has international academic conferences twice or three times each year.   

The school follows by the guidance of her operation concept “leading in application, breaking through in theory, operating with responsibility”, and it strives to cultivate talents, promote the research level and elevates the distinctive disciplines to the world-class level.
