Introduction of SEPE

The School of Energy and Power Engineering (SEPE) is one of the departments founded by Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT), one of the predecessors of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics of SEPE, as the first batch of First-level National Key Disciplines, is one of the first three “Double-First Class” disciplines in China. SEPE offers 6 subdisciplines, including Engineering Thermophysics, Thermal Engineering, Power Machinery and Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, and New Energy Science and Engineering. Additionally, Energy and Power Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Technology, and New Energy Science and Engineering are national first-class undergraduate programs. SEPE boasts of a discipline system supported by the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, National Energy Clean Coal Low Carbon Generation Technology R & D (Test) Center, Energy Saving and Emission Reduction of Energy & Power Devices Engineering Research Center, MOE, and 9 national engineering practice centers.

The school carries out scientific research and talent training mainly centered on low-carbon, efficient and safe use of fossil energy, deep and joint removal of pollutants, optimization of energy terminal utilization and energy saving, renewable energy, and advanced power plants. Since 2012, we have made remarkable achievements in scientific research, as the number of state-level projects like the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) ranked the top among the Chinese counterparts. Furthermore, our international cooperation has yielded major results with nearly 200 million yuan from the international cooperation fund.

SEPE has the HUST’s first engineering innovation group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the first batch of National Programs of introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities with follow-up funds, and the first batch of the Innovation Teams of “985” Program of the Ministry of Education.56 professors were awarded the special government allowances and National Talent Titles by The State Council.

We have won 4 second prizes of National Natural Science Award, 3 second prizes of National Technology Invention Award, 4 second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and 3 second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award. In recent five years, nearly 2000 papers have been included in SCI, among which papers related to LBM and coal combustion ranked first in the world. In the past ten years, the contribution of citations of published papers to the engineering subject of HUST entering the top 1 of ESI ranked first in the university. Additionally, the highest single paper citation was 5301 times, ranking first in the University, and over 100 invention patents were authorized per year.

The school has a strong faculty of 68 professors, 65 associate professors, and 12 lecturers. At present, SEPE has 661 master’s students, 375 doctoral students, and nearly 1200 undergraduate students. A high-quality talent training system with a solid foundation and great possibilities has been established, and an excellent atmosphere of study and scientific research has been formed. In the past 70 years, many outstanding graduates have become academicians in Chinese, American, and Australian Engineering Academies. Besides, numerous prominent graduates have worked in well-known universities, enterprises, and government agencies at home and abroad.

We have established long-term cooperation with famous universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy, and Portugal. In recent years, the presidents of many international prestigious universities and more than 100 professors from abroad have visited our school for academic exchanges and joint training of students.

Under the guidance of the educational philosophy of leading in application, breakthrough in basic subjects, and responsibility in action, the school will strive to cultivate students, carry out in-depth scientific research, maintain the comprehensive strength of the disciplines at the leading position in China, and develop our key and characteristic disciplines into international first-level disciplines.
