Introduction of EPE
The School of Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) was one of the schools founded by Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT), one of the predecessors of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics of EPE, as the first batch of First-level National Key Disciplines, is one of the three “Double-First Class” disciplines in China. EPE has 6 secondary disciplines, including Engineering Thermophysics, Thermal Engineering, Power Machinery and Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, and New Energy Science and Engineering. Additionally,Energy and Power Engineering,Nuclear Engineering and Technology, and New Energy Science and Engineering are national first-class undergraduate programs. EPE boasts of a discipline system supported by State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, National Energy Clean Coal Low Carbon Generation Technology R & D (Test) Center, Energy Saving and Emission Reduction of Energy & Power Devices Engineering Research Center, MOE, and 9 national engineering practice centers.
The school carries out scientific researches and talent training centered on low-carbon, efficient and safe use of fossil energy, deep and joint removal of pollutants, optimization of energy terminal utilization and energy saving, renewable energy, and advanced power plants. Since 2012, we have made remarkable achievements in scientific research, as the number of state-level projects like National Natural Science Foundation of China, ranks the top in the discipline ofEngineering Thermophysics and Power Engineering. We have more than 10 National Natural Science Key Projects, 12National Key Research and Development Projects, and 2 National Support Projects. Furthermore, our international cooperation has yielded major results with nearly 200 million yuan of the international cooperation fund.
EPE has the HUST’s first engineering innovation group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the first batch of National Programs of introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities with follow-up funds, and the first batch of theInnovative Team of “985” Program of the Ministry of Education. The State Council has awarded 48professors of EPE the special government allowances or National Talent Titles. 37 professors were nominated as “Huazhong Excellence Scholar”.
We have won 3 second prizes of National Natural Science Award, 3 second prizes of National Technological Invention Award, 4 second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and 1 second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award.In recent five years, nearly 2000 SCI papers have beenpublished, among which papers related to LBM and coal combustion rank first in the world. In the past ten years, the contribution of citations of published papers to the engineering subject of HUST entering the top 1‰ of ESI ranked first in the university. Additionally, the highest single paper citation is more than 3000 times, ranking first in the University, and over 80 invention patents are authorized per year.
The school has a strong faculty of 62 professors and 62 associate professors. In recent years, 1 professor was twice appointed as chief scientist of theNational Key Basic Research and Development Program (973); 1 professor was twice awarded as an expert in the field of energy ofNational High-tech Research and Development Program (863); 2 professors were selected as national candidates for New Century Excellent Researchers Project; 5 professors were awarded National Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars; 3 professors were appointed as distinguished professors of “Changjiang Scholars Program”, and one of them was appointed as chair professor of “Changjiang Scholars Program”; 4 professors were selected into the Special Support Program for High-level Talents of China.We also have won the first batch of theInnovative Team of “985” Program of the Ministry of Education, and the Innovative Research Team of Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province. Some professors were awarded as members of the subject evaluation group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, members of the professional evaluation group of National Science & Technology Awards, and subject evaluation experts of National Natural Science Foundation of China.
At present, EPE has 576 Master’s students, 275 Doctoral students, and nearly 1100 undergraduate students. A high-quality talent training system with a solid foundation and great possibilities has been established, and an excellent atmosphere of study and scientific research has been formed. In the past 60 years, many outstanding graduates have become academicians in Chinese, American, and Australian Engineering Academies. Besides, numerous prominent graduates have worked in well-known universities, enterprises, and government agencies at home and abroad.
We have established long-term cooperation with famous universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy, and Portugal. In recent years, the presidents of many international prestigious universities and more than 100 professors from abroad have visited our school for academic exchanges and joint training of students.
Under the guidance of the educational philosophy of leading in application, breakthrough in basic subjects, and responsibility in action, the school will strive to cultivate students, carry out in-depth scientific researches, maintain the comprehensive strength of the disciplines at the leading position in China, and develop our key and characteristic disciplines into international first-level disciplines.
