School of Energy and Power Engineering to celebrate its 70th anniversary

Over the past 70 years, EPE has passed the knowledge and ethos down from generation to generation. We will continue to make strenuous efforts to forge ahead in the new era.
As Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) will celebrate its 70th anniversary in October 2022, the 70th anniversary of the School of Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) is also approaching. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere greetings to the alumni at home and abroad. We would also like to express our utmost respect and heartfelt gratitude to the university leaders, faculty, students and stuff, as well as friends from all social sectors, who have long been taking a keen interest in and supporting the development of EPE.
With seven decades of glorious history, the school holds a consistent aspiration for first-class. The earliest three undergraduate majors of the school, Thermal Power Installation, Internal Combustion Engine, and Hydraulic Power Installation, are three of the eight founding majors of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (formerly known as Huazhong Institute of Technology). Over the past 70 years, EPE’s discipline strength has always been holding a resilient lead. Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics are the first batch of First-level National Key Disciplines and have been shortlisted for the national “Double First-Class” disciplines for two consecutive rounds. The three undergraduate majors of Energy and Power Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Technology, and New Energy Science and Engineering have been selected as the construction sites of national first-class undergraduate majors. In the Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2020, the discipline of Energy Science and Engineering ranks sixth in the world. In the U.S. NEWS Best Global Universities by subject in 2021, the discipline of Energy and Fuel ranked sixth in the world.
Over the past 70 years, EPE has cultivated numerous brilliant talents for the country. The school has adhered to the fundamental purpose of training qualified professionals with upright morality, followed the rules of talent training, built an all-round innovative talent training system, structured a new model of mutual integration and progress under the pattern of “Three Comprehensive Education” (whole process, all staff and all-round education), and focused on cultivating outstanding talents in engineering disciplines. The school innovated the talent training model and fully implemented the “5211 Education Program”; “Reform and Practice of the All-round Multi-level Training System of ‘535’ Innovative Talents in Energy and Power Disciplines” won the second prize of national teaching achievements. Over the past 70 years, the school has adhered to the “Four Services” principles and has cultivated more than 25,000 students. A group of academic dignitaries, political elites, scientists and researchers as well as industry leaders, represented by academicians and outstanding entrepreneurs, have emerged, contributing wisdom and strength to the development of national economy and our society.
In the past 70 years, we have taken firm steps and never stopped making progress. The school has always adhered to the “Four Orientations” principles, focused on the needs of the national energy strategy, laid a strong foundation for the disciplines of combustion, thermal science, and power machinery, and reached international leading or advanced level in the fields of fossil fuel combustion and pollutant control, thermal science intersection and frontiers, etc. EPE has established national-level scientific research platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion and the National Energy Coal Clean and Low-Carbon Power Generation Technology R&D Center, and led the construction of international cooperation platforms such as the Sino-US Clean Energy Research Center - Advanced Coal Technology Consortium (CERC-ACTC). The China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (CEICARE) has been hailed as the “model and flagship project of China-EU higher education cooperation” by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In recent years, the school has won three second prizes of National Natural Science Award, one second prize of National Technology Invention Award, four second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and one Nukiyama Memorial Award in Thermal Science and Engineering. The papers related to LBM and coal combustion rank first in the world, and the contribution of citations of published papers to the engineering subject of HUST entering the top 1‰ of ESI ranked first in the university. The commercialization of technological achievements has exceeded 10 million yuan, generating tens of billions of yuan in economic benefits for enterprises. The school established a multi-pollutant ultra-low emission collaborative control system for coal-fired power plants. The 35MWth Oxygen-enriched Combustion Demonstration Project was deemed as a “milestone” progress of international oxy-enriched combustion.
With 70 years of history, EPE remains true to our original aspiration and keeps our mission firmly in mind. Guided by the principles of putting application first, achieving fundamental breakthroughs and acting with responsibility, the school will take the 70th anniversary as an opportunity to bring together the strength of alumni at home and abroad, faculty, students and staff, as well as friends from all social sectors with confidence and a spirit of unity, accelerating the intensive and high-quality development of the school.
