On June 24th, 2022, invited by Prof. Dunxi Yu from State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, School of Power and Energy Engineering, HUST, Prof. Xi Jiang delivered a lecture entitled “Advanced Modelling/Simulation for Cleaner Combustion & Fuel Property Predictions”. He is the Chair of the Division of Chemical Engineering and Renewable Energy, Queen Mary University of London. As the third international exchange academic event for the 70th anniversary of EPE, the lecture attracted more than 800 audiences.

Prof. Xi Jiang firstly described the significance and the role of various simulation and modeling methods in the research of clean and efficient energy utilization. Then, with specific examples, Prof. Xi Jiang presented in detail the application of advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and modeling in clean combustion and fuel characteristics prediction.
In the first part, Prof. Xi Jiang introduced the advantages and drawbacks of different CFD methods in the application of clean combustion. The application conditions and scope of simulation methods such as direct numerical simulation (DNS), large eddy simulation (LES), and Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) were explained. Combined with his more than 20 years of research experience, Prof. Xi Jiang showed how to use advanced simulation and modeling methods such as DNS and LES to solve specific engineering problems.

In the second part, Prof. Xi Jiang introduced the characteristics of MD method and its application in the prediction of new fuel characteristics. Different from the macro CFD method, MD method has a unique advantage in revealing the mechanism by understanding the combustion process from the molecular/atomic level. Prof. Xi Jiang also presented the application of MD method in understanding the pyrolysis process of mixed fuels by taking ammonia-coal mixed combustion as an example.
