Department of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was upgraded to an undergraduate major in 1960, granted the right to offer master's degree in 1981 and doctor's degree in 1990. Since its establishment, the discipline has played a positive role in cultivating refrigeration and cryogenic technical professionals and promoting the discipline and industrial development of refrigeration and cryogenics engineering. The department has derived a high reputation at home and abroad. Till now, the department has compiled more than 40 professional textbooks and monographs. It has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the national 973 project, the National 863 project, the national science and technology support plan, science and technology projects in Hubei Province and Wuhan, and enterprise development projects. It has won one national science and technology progress award, one first prize for teaching achievements in Hubei Province, 17 science and technology progress awards of provincial ministries and commissions, and more than 100 authorized patents. At present, more than 30 doctors, 400 masters, and 3000 undergraduates have been trained and cultivated.
The main research fields include refrigerant substitution and application, data-driven HVAC intelligent operation and maintenance, thermal and humidity control theory and technology, regenerative cryocoolers, new refrigeration technology, Stirling refrigeration technology, low-temperature two-phase flow heat transfer, etc. It has an energy-saving and environmental protection refrigerant and application joint laboratory, Hubei intelligent cold chain logistics engineering technology research center, and national engineering practice education center.
