The Sino-UK Workshop on Biomass Conversion and Utilisation, organized by the School of Energy and Power Engineering (EPE), HUST, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of University of Liverpool, was successfully held in HUST from December 9th to 11th. With two venues in the U.K. and China respectively, this conference was held in the combination of online and offline. The workshop was co-chaired by Prof. Chen Hanping from EPE, and Prof. Tu Xin from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of University of Liverpool, with Prof. Yang Haiping from EPE as the executive chair. The conference was attended by 20 researchers from foreign universities and research institutes including University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, Imperial College London, and 80 researchers from domestic universities and research institutes such as HUST and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Experts and scholars in the field of biomass delivered speeches on their research achievements and made in-depth discussions.

In the context of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals in China, the Sino-UK Workshop on Biomass Conversion and Utilisation was of paramount importance, said Prof. Chen. He hoped that this conference would be a platform to promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation among scholars in the field of energy and gather strength in the industry.
The first half of the workshop was the Chinese symposium. Experts and scholars from HUST, Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Branch, Southeast University, Harbin Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Wuhan University delivered speeches centered on three topics: “A new carbon sequestration strategy for the combination of carbon and oxygen in biomass under carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals”, “Construction of biomass high-value catalytic system”, and “Preparation of high-value chemicals by directional conversion of biomass-syngas”. The participants had exchanges and discussions based on the reports.

The second half of the conference was the English symposium. Experts and scholars from University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, Imperial College London, Queen’s University Belfast, HUST, Nanchang University, Tianjin University made reports themed as “Exploring the potential of single-atom catalysts for biomass conversion”, “Thermochemical conversion of waste biomass to gaseous fuels”, “Conventional and emerging applications ofbiochar”, and “Reverse water gas shift reaction integrated with CO2 capture”. The scholars fully demonstrated their latest research results in biomass utilization and conversion.
At the end of the workshop, Prof. Yang and Prof. Tu made concluding remarks respectively. This conference greatly advanced the exchange between British and Chinese scholars and was of great significance to promote our research cooperation in the future, said Prof. Yang. Prof. Tu highly appreciated the research results presented by the scholars and expected further exchanges between the both sides.
