On November 3rd, 2021, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council held State Science and Technology Awards Conference in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. State leaders such as Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Wang Huning, and Han Zheng attended the conference and presented awards to the award-winning representatives. The project “Theory and method of convective heat transfer enhancement based on multi-field synergy and dissipation minimization” completed by Professor Liu Wei’s team from the School of Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) won the second prize of National Natural Science Award.

Heat exchange equipment is widely utilized in many industrial processes, such as power, electric power, chemistry, oil refining, steel, metallurgy, food, and light industry. Over 75% of its internal energy transfer relies on convective heat transfer. However, for a long time, the energy consumption of convective heat transfer inside the equipment and the synergetic enhancement of heat transfer and flow remained unsolved. Supported by the National Key Basic Research and Development Program (973) and the key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Professor Liu Wei’s team has been committed to the research on theory and technology of convective heat transfer enhancement. They have worked for more than ten years and solved key scientific issues, such as the mechanism of fluid pressure on heat transfer and flow, the multi-field synergy of heat transfer and flow, and the energy consumption during the process of convective heat transfer. More importantly, the theory of convective heat transfer enhancement based on multi-field synergy and dissipation minimization, and a new method of convective heat transfer enhancement to reduce process energy consumption have been proposed, realizing a breakthrough in the theory of convective heat transfer enhancement, and providing important theoretical support for the development of high-efficiency and low-power industrial heat exchange equipment.
