Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and the School of Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) will celebrate their 70th anniversary in October 2022. To promote the “double first-class” construction of the school, and create an academic atmosphere for the upcoming anniversary, EPE has conducted a series of academic activities for international exchange with 5 universities that join the “partnership universities” program of HUST since April 2022, including St Petersburg University, National University of Singapore, Queen Mary University of London, ITMO University, and RWTH Aachen University. The activities have provided an academic exchange platform for domestic and foreign scholars, researchers, and experts from relevant industry associations, and have advanced the development of disciplines of EPE.
Symposium on Multiphase Flow and Statistical Physics
Symposium on Multiphase Flow and Statistical Physics, co-organized by EPE of HUST and the Faculty of Physics of St Petersburg University (SPBU), was held on April 1st. This symposium was the first meeting of HUST-SPBU Academic Exchange Month. Six scholars from the Department of Statistical Physics of SPBU, EPE of HUST, and China Jiliang University reported their research progress on multiphase flow and statistical physics, and more than 60 students and faculty members attended the conference online. Prof. Alexander Shchekin, Head of the Department of Statistical Physics of SPBU, delivered a report entitled “Molecular-Thermodynamic Theory of Micellization and Solubilization”. Prof. Yu Mingzhou from China Jiliang University mainly introduced numerical methods for solving Brownian Coagulation Equation. Prof. Dmitry Tatyanenko gave a report on “Nucleation Theory and Modern Equations of State for Hard Spheres”. Prof. Feng Guang of EPE, HUST introduced “Molecular Modeling of Energy Storage in Supercapacitors with Ionic Liquids”. Prof. Nikolai Volkov gave a report entitled “Molecular Dynamics Modeling of Direct and Inverse Micelles”. Dr. Jiang Maoqiang introduced “Subgrid Scale Motion Characteristics in the Large Eddy Simulations of Particle-laden Turbulence and Structured Subgrid Model with the Particle-seen Fluid Velocity”. This conference was of great significance to promote exchange among scholars and lay a foundation for further cooperation.

“HUST-NUS Academic Lecture Series” of EPE
On April 6, HUST-NUS Academic Lecture on “High Performance Direct Chip Liquid Cooling for Effective Co-Management of Temperature, Power and Performance of Next Generation Electronics” was held online. Prof. Lee Poh Seng, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NUS, delivered a speech online, with more than 500 scholars and students attending online. Prof. Lee introduced the current trend of the data center and the performance and prospect of direct chip liquid cooling. The seminar triggered participants’ creativity, deepened their understanding of chip cooling technology, and also improved the discipline development of EPE.

“HUST-QMUL Academic Lecture Series” of EPE
On June 24th, the “HUST-QMUL Academic Lecture Series” of EPE was successfully held. Prof. Xi Jiang delivered a lecture entitled “Advanced Modelling/Simulation for Cleaner Combustion & Fuel Property Predictions”. He is the Chair of the Division of Chemical Engineering and Renewable Energy, Queen Mary University of London. This lecture attracted more than 800 audiences. Prof. Xi Jiang presented in detail the application of advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and modeling in clean combustion and fuel characteristics prediction. This lecture was of great significance to broaden the international outlook of scholars and provide a good reference for those who engaged in relevant research.

“HUST-ITMO Academic Lecture Series” of EPE
On June 28th, the “HUST-ITMO Academic Lecture Series” of EPE, jointly organized by EPE and the Scientific and Educational Center “Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology” of ITMO was successfully held online. Associate Prof. Pavel Krivoshapkin and Associate Prof. Elena Krivoshapkina of ITMO delivered lectures entitled “Nanoarchitecture: Directed Design of Hybrid Materials” and “Smart Materials and Carbon Dioxide Conversion into Value-Added Chemicals” respectively. The event attracted more than 80 teachers and students from ITMO, HUST, and other domestic and foreign universities to participate online. In the context of China’s dual carbon goals, it is vital to explore the structure and application of new materials and carbon dioxide conversion. This event has promoted students’ understanding of nanobioarchitectonics and has improved the development of new energy, new materials, and energy conservation and emission reduction in the school.

“HUST-RWTH Academic Lecture Series” of EPE
On June 29, the “HUST-RWTH Academic Lecture Series” of EPE was successfully held. Dr. Matthias Meinke, the team manager of Computational Fluid Dynamics Department of the Institute of Aerodynamics RWTH Aachen University, gave a lecture entitled "Prediction of the Turbulent Flow and Acoustic Field for Turbomachinery Applications”. More than 1000 scientific researchers from HUST, Northwestern Polytechnical University, as well as relevant industries participated online. This lecture showed the participants the international frontier in this field and let them gain valuable experience in numerical simulation and analysis of internal flow and noise of turbomachinery, which inspired researchers’ new ideas for future research.
Dr. Matthias Meinke delivering a speech
In the past seven decades, we have taken firm steps and never stopped making progress. EPE will continue to carry out high-quality international exchange academic activities with foreign universities and scientific research institutions, provide an exchange platform for scholars and teachers, and further expand and deepen academic cooperation with other universities.
