(Correspondent: Liwen Fu, Tingting Fan) On December 19, 2022, Professor Su Shiung LamDirector of the International Centre of  University Malaysia Terengganushared an academic lecture entitled "Microwave Processing of Biomass Waste for Circular Waste Management" online. The lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Jing’ai Shao from the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. More than 100 teachers and students attended online, including Professor Haiping Yang, Professor Xianhua Wang, Associate Professor Yingquan Chen, Associate Professor Xiong Zhang, Assistant Professor Qiang Hu, Associate Professor Pan Li from Zhengzhou University, Associate Professor Jian Li from Xinjiang University, Associate Professor Dingding Yao from Huazhong Agricultural University and Associate Professor Youjian Zhu from Zhengzhou University of Light Industry.

In the lecture, Professor Lam mainly elaborated on the importance and role of biomass microwave pyrolysis in the clean and efficient utilization of energy. Firstly, Professor Lam introduced the advantages and challenges of biomass microwave pyrolysis, summarized the current methods for improving the quality of microwave pyrolysis products, and elaborated the characteristics of conventional pyrolysis and microwave pyrolysis of biomass based on his research experience. Professor Lam further proposed new ideas such as microwave co-pyrolysis, microwave catalytic pyrolysis and microwave vacuum pyrolysis, and displayed the team's microwave vacuum pyrolysis experimental platform in detail. Then, Professor Lam introduced the preparation and application of pyrolysis products, summarized the physical and chemical characteristics of pyrolysis products, and showed the effective way of microwave pyrolysis to improve the yield and selectivity of pyrolysis products. In the end of the lecture, Professor Lam focused on the importance and role of carbon and nitrogen regulation in soil to promote food safety.

This lecture greatly promoted students' understanding of biomass microwave pyrolysis and pyrolysis process, and had a positive impact on the development and construction of new energy, new materials, energy conservation, and emission reduction and other disciplines of the college.
