On August 2, International Outlook and Global Competence Workshop 2022 Summer Camp on Renewable Energy Sources concluded successfully.
The Summer Camp lasts for 16 days, covering topics related to renewable energy including Hydrogen & Fuel Cells, Wind, Energy Efficiency & Storage, Thermal Solar, Geothermal, Biomass, and Solar Photovoltaic. There are 8 teachers in total to deliver conferences, who come from European universities such as Mines Paris Tech, Northumbria University, National Metsovian Polytechnic, The University of Florence, and University of Zaragoza. 30 students in all have completed all the courses and got the Certificate of Completion.
Alain THOREL delivered Hydrogen and Fuel Cells. After introducing the global utilization of hydrogen energy, he taught students the source of hydrogen energy, hydrogen economy, electrochemistry, and the classification of fuel cells. The reaction process of catalysts and substances at a microscopic level was also illustrated.
Georgios KARALIS taught Wind Energy. He mainly introduced the wind market, the principle of wind energy utilization, the history of wind turbine development, and the classification and comparison of wind turbines.
Cong Toan TRAN presented Energy Efficiency & Storage. He showed the calculation method of thermal efficiency, different thermal efficiency, and plans for energy storage. He also illustrated how to improve cycle thermal efficiency in terms of the analytical evaluation of Pinch Value.
Quentin FALCOZ delivered Thermal Solar. He elaborated on the advantages and disadvantages of solar thermal technology. Combined with the overview of solar photothermal conversion methods and theoretical calculation, he illustrated the primary factors affecting photothermal conversion and showed the application of concentrated solar power plants.
Geothermal Energy was presented by Enrico PANDELI. From the source and history of geothermal energy, he introduced the principles of geothermal energy utilization and gave detailed examples. He stressed the rich geothermal energy resources in northern China, which has great potential for exploration.
Inmaculada ARAUZO and Cristobal CORTES presented Biomass in this Summer Camp. The principles of utilizing solid and gaseous fuels, biogas, and liquid fuels, and their applications were introduced. They also presented the generation and utilization of substances like sugar, starch, and cellulose, and numerous examples of biomass-fired power plant applications were given.
The course on Solar Photovoltaic was delivered by Ian FORBES, who emphasized that different from photothermal power generation which focuses light to utilize thermal energy, solar photovoltaic power generation applies the absorption of specific wavelengths of light by photovoltaic cells. He also made an in-depth introduction to photovoltaic devices, materials, and related photovoltaic systems.
With the combination of online English teaching mode, group discussion, quizzes, and oral presentation, this Summer Camp offers a platform for students to better absorb knowledge.
Aiming to promote the development of the “double first-class” of the school and to broaden students’ international outlook and global competence, this Summer Camp has attracted wide attention from students. After 16 days of cooperation and exchange, students have acquired professional knowledge and exercised their abilities in English learning and teamwork. They have had a comprehensive understanding of the international frontier related to renewable energy and a profound reflection on China’s dual carbon goals.

First of all, it can be seen from the courseware that the teachers are very responsible for the course. The presentation in class increases the courage of the students' ability to communicate with the teachers, and improves their enthusiasm for the course.
"English is a bridge of communication with the world". Sometimes I hope these courses will be taught in Chinese, but I know it is the English teaching mode that can exercise our oral English ability and communication skills.
The college provides us with a platform to communicate with the outside world, and lets us see a broader academic world. The whole English teaching model has also exercised our language ability, let me see the significance of English as a bridge to the world in the process of cultural and academic exchanges, and strengthened my determination to study English seriously.
In short, the summer camp is short, but I have a deeper understanding of hydrogen energy and other renewable energy expertise, and I also have greater hope and enthusiasm for the prospect of energy! This also let me see their own shortcomings in the language, but the "lack of knowledge" can continue to move forward! I will continue to work hard!

I’m glad to express my feelings during the summer camp. Firstly, the classes from professors are pretty nice, and the data given by them count for much. I learned a lot during the camp and as a freshman, I had a better understanding of my major. While to be honest, as one of the four freshmen in the camp, I sincerely think some of the specialized knowledge is difficult for me to understand profoundly. But I still learned a lot, like how to read papers, how to collect data, and analyze practical problems. What’s more, the presentation also gives me the opportunity to express myself and to practice oral and listening English.
Overall, it is an unforgettable experience in my campus life. Thanks to all professors and teachers again.

Through this summer camp course, I learned a lot and had enough harvest. First of all, in terms of professional knowledge, I learned for the first time that the utilization mode of solar energy is diversified, and the direct utilization of thermal energy has been very mature. I have heard that more solar cells have also been developing rapidly. Secondly, the literature sharing before the formal class also expanded my knowledge, and I also benefited several students who shared it in English a lot. Of course, the teachers' three-hour course gave me a certain understanding of all aspects. Although some parts are difficult, I can also understand them with ppt and materials after class. The teacher speaks with a certain accent, but this is more in line with the actual communication. Thanks to the college held this summer camp, I hope to do better and better.
